What are the electric moped laws in Sydney?

Just like all road-approved vehicles, there are several road laws and rules that you'll need to abide by when riding an e-moped. Here are the laws in Sydney surrounding e-mopeds:

• Speed limits for your e-moped will vary depending on your location. Shared paths are limited to under 10 km/h, and roads with speed limits of 50 km/h are limited to 20 km/h
• You must be over 16 years of age to ride an e-bike in Sydney
• E-bikes with pedals and under 200 W motor are legal on public paths; more powerful e-bikes are subject to moped laws
• Riders must wear helmets and other safety protection at all times, and carrying passengers is strictly prohibited
• New regulations since early 2025 enforce lithium battery safety to reduce fire risks, so non-conforming devices are no longer allowed
