Can you ride electric scooters in Sydney?

The NSW Centre for Road Safety currently states “Powered foot scooters and skateboards cannot be registered and can only be used on private land”.

So electric scooters generally may not be used on roads, and are not legal to ride on public footpaths or other public places.

The rules DO allow for your foot scooter to be used on footpaths, and designated bike lanes with certain conditions. So in this case, human power is mightier than a motorised scooter!

So where CAN you ride them around Sydney? Please be sure to check with your local authorities – Department of Transport for NSW, and follow their advice on riding an electric scooter, as well as the rules applying to foot scooters. Remember that e scooters are different to e bikes, while they’re all a wheeled recreational device, there are different rules.
